About the Harz mountains

  • Exceeding the climatic tree line at 1100 m height above sea level.
  • Natural vegetation dominated by beech (over 80 %)
  • Actual vegetation dominated by spruce (over 80 %) caused by former mining industry (of the least 1000 years), Second World War and former forestry policy
  • Affected by forest decline in the eighties
  • Since 1985 intensive promotion of beech by planting to increase the stability of spruce stands
